My work has been focused in Biomedical Engineering, namely, in Biomedical Signal and Image Processing and Physiological Modeling of Biological Systems. Statistical signal and image processing methods for reconstruction and denoising of Ultrasound, functional MRI and Fluorescence Microscopy Images, under a Bayesian framework, are central issues in his research activity as well as signal processing of physiological data for computer aided diagnosis purposes. Almost all my research activity is in collaboration with the Medical School of Lisbon and other research institutions in the areas of Medicine and Biology.
  I'm senior member of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society and Member of the Bio Imaging and Signal Processing Technical Committee (BISP-TC) of the IEEE Signal Processing Society and president of the Portuguese Association of Pattern Recognition (APRP) a member of the International Association of Pattern Recognition (IAPR).


Research Interests

  • Statistical signal and Image Processing - Biological and Medical Imaging processing.
  • Biological modeling and identification in a Systems and Control Theory framework, e.g., Cardio vascular modeling (Baroreflex and respiration) for Biofeedback applications.
  • Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD).
  • Medical applications: Atherosclerosis Disease of the Carotid, Chronic Liver Disease (CLD), HRV, Cardiovascular system and Autonomic Nervous System (ANS).
